iOS 4.2 available for iPad and iPhone
Today Apple released the latest major OS for the iPad and iphone, iOS 4.2! We posted some thoughts of the new OS apple will be rolling out awhile back, iOS 4.2 new updates. Today we want to give some additional information about the new changes to iOS 4.2 that Apple recently released.
– Airplay – I was very excited when I first saw this demoed. How cool to be able to be looking at a photo on your iPhone and basically flick it over to your TV? With Airplay you can now share photos, movies and music with the new Apple TV (not the previous version though) or any other Airplay enabled speaker device. It really is a cool idea and if the new Apple TV takes off and is adopted by more people this feature will get more and more useful. Think about heading over to a friends house to hang out and you start talking about your last vacation, if they had an Apple TV you can easily and pretty seamlessly pop your photos from your iPhone to their TV. No cords, no hassles it just works.
– AirPrint – Airprint is something that I think will start to change the way people use their iPads, blurring the lines a little between traditional laptops and the iPad. It’s embedded into many apps already, email, safari, the iWork suite of apps and adds a Print button to the current list of additional options (in mail its in the list with Forward and Reply and Safari in the list with Mail Link to This Page). It was designed to work seamless and easy, just a few taps and it will send the document to the printer. And without having to use printer drivers has nothing to setup it should just simply work. The only negative thing is because of that there are only a small list of supported printers for AirPrint. Apple has stated they will be adding more printers to the list but for now you are stuck with one of these printers.

– Find My iPhone – I have always thought that tech companies should do more to help prevent theft. I know it isn’t in their best interest financially but really a good PR move and makes you feel better about the purchase. Find my iPhone doesn’t fully solve theft but I think it’s a good step that can help people recover their lost iPhones. This used to be available for only paying mobile me customers but now is free to all you just need to setup an Apple ID. For more information on how to set this up see Apple website, Find My iPhone.
– Safari Search – Similar to using the Find button on any browser you are used to for your desktop you can now search the current safari page you are on. Just start typing in the Google search bar in safari and at the bottom you will see “On This Page – Find “search term”” Just click on the term and a new navigation bar opens at the bottom of the page where you can scroll through all of the instances of that word on the page. Very useful and implemented well into the iPad.
While the iPhone didn’t get as many new updates as the iPad did to catch up on this release its still a solid update. As these updates keep coming the iPad is getting to be a stronger and stronger device and we think in the future going to be even a larger player in the computing world. Its an exciting time and we can’t wait to see what we will be able to create with new apps coming out.
There are lots of other little gems with this iOS 4.2 update, if you haven’t downloaded it yet fire up iTunes and sync your device.
We will also be releasing some 4.2 features into some upcoming apps so stay tuned for more info.
